We're Making Progress! Fairway and More.

The entire west wall of the Red Hook Stores Warehouse has been opened with arched windows.

Fairway Market Up Date

The 230,000 sq. ft. Red Hook Stores warehouse at the end of Van Brunt St. was built during the Civil War and is being redeveloped for a new Fairway Market, office space for businesses and local non-profits, artists work space and residential units.

We’re not there yet, but we’re making progress. Since spring 2003, the construction crew has hauled out over 80 trailers of garbage and demolition debris. Homes were found for the resident community of cats (four score at least), and a ton of original red brick has been cleaned up for re-use.

The entire exterior of the 5-story building has been re-pointed, and we’re almost finish with the windows on the western façade. We’ve had to break through a 24” exterior wall to create 56 beautiful, 9-foot arched windows. The view is pretty spectacular.

All we need is final approval on our plans from the Building Department to get going on the interior design that includes an interior “atrium” three stories deep.

More updates as we progress.

Pier 44 Waterfront Garden in Bloom!

The new garden on the boardwalk near the Pier 44  jetty is in full bloom -- pink cone flowers, purple Russian sage and deep red saucer-size Lord Baltimore hibiscus.  Pure white crepe paper buds are on the Rose of  Sharon and the grasses have shot up their spikes. The "Point" (pictured on the right) has a Zen-like quality of  quiet.  All we need to do is seed. Once we get the railings installed, we'll be ready to go.  Hoping for a Fall opening.  The Waterfront Garden is one phase of a 1/2-mile walkway that extends from the end of the Beard St. Warehouse promenade to Pier 41 and will be open to the public. It also includes a NY Water Taxi stop, the Pier 44 jetty (future home of the Waterfront Museum & Showboat Barge), and a beachside boardwalk.

Spud-Barge Signals New Red Hook Stop for Water-Taxi

New York WaterTaxi's new spud-barge signals a new dawn for Red Hook commuters. Relieving the one part of the Hook's longstanding difficulties, the WaterTaxi is a welcomed sight.
